29 September 2023 • Alums Fundraising Tops $35 Million in 2022-23

New gifts and commitments to Hobart and William Smith totaled nearly $36 million during the 2022-23 fiscal year, the second best fundraising year in the Colleges’ history.

Following last year’s record-breaking support, Hobart and William Smith received gifts from approximately 5,000 donors during the 2022-23 fiscal year for a total of $35.7 million raised. Gifts during the 12-month period between July 1, 2022 and June 30, 2023 included two $5 million gifts and seven of $1 million or more. Donations included approximately $3.7 million directed toward the Annual Fund and a record-setting $1.3 million in support of Hobart and William Smith Athletics.

“After an extraordinary Bicentennial year, these results further fuel Hobart and William Smith as we launch into our third century,” says President Mark D. Gearan. “The incredible support of our community will advance scholarships, academic programs, student wellness, athletics and the relationship-rich experiences our students develop with faculty mentors. I remain grateful to our donors and to our Advancement team, whose diligent work has helped set the course for the Colleges’ future.”

Chair of the Board of Trustees Craig Stine ’81, P’17 says that after last year’s success, “the wind is at our back. With the support of our community, we’ve made tremendous progress on our strategic goals and this latest giving year adds to our momentum. This is a truly exciting time for Hobart and William Smith.”

Donations during the past year include two $5 million gifts — one from Kevin Stein ’88 and his family in support of a state-of-the-art building that will be the hub of scientific education at Hobart and William Smith; the other from Honorary Trustee Katherine D. Elliott ’66, L.H.D. ’08 in support of scholarships and the Annual Fund.

Athletics Day of Donors shattered the record for the most dollars raised in a single day as alums, parents and fans gave just over $1 million in support of the Statesmen and Herons. Meanwhile, the inaugural Scholarship Day of Donors set a giving day record for the most Annual Fund support in a single day, with more than $650,000 given in support of Annual Fund scholarships.

“I want to thank our alums, parents and friends, whose support continues to propel the Colleges to new heights,” says Vice President for Advancement Bob O’Connor P’22, P’23. “It’s incredibly rewarding to see the enthusiasm of our network of alums and our broader community mirror the enthusiasm of our students, faculty and staff on campus — and to see it translated into such overwhelming support. I look forward to the transformative outcomes that I know will result from the generosity of our HWS community.”
