2 November 2018 HWS Awarded 5th Fulbright-Hays Grant in Russian Studies
For the fifth time since 2006, Hobart and William Smith Colleges’ Russian Area Studies program has been awarded a Fulbright-Hays Group Projects Abroad grant from the U.S. Department of Education.
The $98,038 grant will fund a six-week, intensive seminar during the summer of 2019, focusing on advanced Russian language and culture in the Siberian city of Barnaul, where HWS Russian Area Studies also maintains its semester student exchange. The grant will cover 99% of total program costs, including international airfare, transportation within Russia, group excursions, tuition and dormitory fees.
Including previous group projects in 2006, 2009, 2015 and 2016, the HWS Russian Area Studies program has earned $438,576 in Fulbright-Hays grants, and more than $1.2 million in external funding since 2004.
This year’s Fulbright-Hays proposal was co-written with Syracuse University, SUNY Binghamton and Howard University as consortia partners, and all four institutions will send students to participate. Students will take a total of 105 hours of Russian language and 20 hours of cultural studies classes while in Barnaul, as well as undertake service projects with local NGOs and expeditions to the Altai mountains region, which borders Kazakhstan, China and Mongolia.
Associate Dean for Curricular Initiatives and Development and Associate Professor of Russian Area Studies David Galloway, who led seminars to Russia in 2006 and 2015, will serve as project director.
