This event has been cancelled and will be rescheduled in the fall.

Seneca Falls, the birthplace of the Womens Rights Movement in the United States, is located only miles from the HWS campus. William Smith himself was a strong advocate for suffrage, and the Colleges remain dedicated to celebrating women. On Friday, March 8, the William Smith Deans Office will continue this long-standing tradition and honor International Womens Day with Jacquelyn Litt 80. Litt will join the Colleges community for a dinner and presentation at 6 p.m. in the Vandervort Room.

The Dean and Professor of Womens and Gender Studies at Douglas Residential College, the womens college of Rutgers University, Litt will share her work with womens networks in post-Hurricane Katrina New Orleans. Much of Litts research is focused on motherhood, carework and inequality.

Litt earned her bachelors in sociology from William Smith College. She later earned both a masters and a Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Pennsylvania. She was the founding chair of the Womens and Gender Studies Department at the University of Missouri and has also directed womens studies programs at Iowa State University and Allegheny College.

In addition to her work in academia, Litt has published numerous works, and her book, Medicalized Motherhood: Perspectives from the Lives of African-American and Jewish Women, earned her the Outstanding Achievement in Scholarship award on race, class, and gender from the American Sociological Association. She also co-authored Global Dimensions of Gender and Carework.
