2 January 2013 Alum Earns Picture of the Year from SI

A photograph taken by former Hobart sailor Amory Ross 06 was named one of the Pictures of the Year by Sports Illustrated online. The photograph was one of a handful of stunning sports pictures featured on the magazines website and was the only sailing photograph to earn a Picture of the Year title.

While aboard PUMAs Mar Mostro as the crews onboard mediamember, Ross took the photo during the nine-month 2011-12 Volvo Ocean Race around the world. The striking picture captures Michi Mueller of Germany as he adjusts a sail during the sixth leg of the race from Itajai, Brazil, to Miami, Florida.

Ross, of Newport, R.I., is a specialist in nautical photography, video and multi-media. He has been a member of many racing crews including Oracle Team USA.

A four-year member of the HWS sailing team, Ross helped the Colleges earn 14 ICSA Championship berths, including the 2005 Team Race and Coed Dinghy National Championships. A double major in economics and public policy, he spent a semester studying off campus in Washington, D.C. Ross turned his love of sailing and photography into a business, Amory Ross Images. His work also has been featured on the cover ofSail,Sailing World,Seahorse International Sailing, andYachting World.
