The William Smith tennis team competed over the weekend in the New York State Championships hosted by Ithaca College. Senior Kiara Ocasio won the fifth singles bracket.
Junior Casey Nicoletti advanced to the championship match in the fourth singles bracket, and Nicoletti teamed with junior Kate OConnor to make it as far as the championship match in third doubles.
Ocasio, the fifth singles brackets No. 2 seed, earned an 8-2 win over RPIs Amanda Alexander in the second round after a first round bye. In the semifinals, Ocasio defeated the No. 3 seed, Ariel Sultan of NYU 7-5, 4-6, 10-4. In the title match, Ocasio triumphed over the top seed, Skidmores Robyn Baird 6-4, 3-6, 10-7.
Nicoletti, the fourth seed in the fourth singles bracket, picked up in win in the first round, defeating Ithacas Allison Vizgaitis 8-4. She then cruised to a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Nazareths Cara Yinger. Nicoletti then rallied to upset top-seeded Jordan Zola of Skidmore 0-6, 6-3, 13-11, for a spot in the championship. She was edged in the final match by the No. 2 seed, NYUs Madeline King, 6-3, 6-0.
In third doubles, Nicoletti and OConnor edged Ithacas Steinweis and Vizgaitis 9-7 in the first round and topped the No. 4 seed, Vassars VanNoy and Kurien, 8-1. In a semifinal match, the Heron pair upset the brackets No. 1 seed, Skidmores Baird and Zola, 8-6 for a spot in the championship match. The No. 3 seed of Pokala and Sultan from NYU defeated Nicoletti and OConnor 8-6 for the title.
Senior Hallsey Leighton dropped her first round match in first singles to RPIs Casey Olsen 8-6. In second singles, sophomore Haley Wolf defeated Brockports Lauren Bohman 8-3 in the first round, but then fell to the No. 2 seed, Alison Wang of NYU, 6-4, 6-0.
In third singles, first-year Charlotte Federowicz topped RPIs Meghan Olsen 8-1 in her first round match, but then fell to fourth-seeded Lindsay Kantor of Vassar, 7-6 (7-1),6-3.
First-year Sydney Arsenault also went 1-1 in the sixth singles bracket. She breezed to an 8-1 triumph in the first round over Brockports Nicole Derose, but then fell to the No. 2 seed, Hannah VanDemark of Vassar 6-1, 6-2.
In first doubles, sophomore Teru Greene and Ocasio earned a first round bye as the brackets No. 2 seed. The pair topped RPIs Olsen and Laurilliard 8-3, but then dropped their semifinal match, 8-5, to the No. 3 seed, Masanto and Wang of NYU.
Senior Remy Raevsky and Leighton represented the Herons in the second doubles bracket. The duo blanked Alfreds Spencer and Eisenberg 8-0 in the first round, but lost in the second round 8-1 to the No. 4 seed, Vassars Stauffer and Yeates.
The Herons have now completed their fall schedule.
