The Department of Art and Architecture will host author and sustainable landscape expert Paul Cawood Hellmund P14 on Tuesday, Oct. 16. He will offer an address called, Fitting Local Food into the Landscape, at 7 p.m. in Albright Auditorium.
Hellmund, the director of the Conway Schools (Massachusetts) Sustainable Landscape Planning and Design Graduate program, will focus the lecture on the prospects for planning and design across landscapes to enhance food security.
He intends to stress the importance of finding ways to enhance food production within the community, especially in a time when many people are questioning the sustainability associated with the fuel-consumption of hauling food long-distances.
With a strong influence on growing locally, Hellmund discusses possible solutions for communities and regions to increase the growth of local foods.
Hellmund was educated at Harvard and Colorado State as a landscape architect and planner. The focus of his design, research, practice, and teaching is to improve the relationship between people and nature, especially in urban, suburban, and degraded landscapes.
He is co-author of Designing Greenways and he co-edited Ecology of Greenways, which was recognized by the American Society of Landscape Architects with a national award.
