Assistant Professor of Music Mark Olivieri recently premiered his latest commissioned work, Move, a string quartet for the acclaimed New York City PUBLIQuartet.
The work premiered as part of the Vision of Sound New Music and Dance Concert Series of which Olivieri serves as artistic director. The pieces two movements, Four Minute Prophet and Elegy for a Rock Star, explore Olivieris ongoing interest in synthesizing traditional concert music with post-modern rhetoric.
Move harnesses a variety of contemporary musical styles such as jazz, folk, and even rock -n- roll. Popular music and culture critic Yisrael Levin commented on the work saying, It is truly mesmerizing, and I dont necessarily mean this in a good way.
Olivieri joined the HWS faculty in 2010. He holds a Ph.D. from the University at Buffalo, a M.M. from Ithaca College Music Conservatory and a B.M. from Heidelberg College.
Move premiered on Sunday, Aug. 26, at the Jan Hus Presbyterian Church, 351 East 74th Street, New York City. The concert was possible thanks to the generous support of Vox Novus in collaboration with the Remarkable Theatre Brigade and Jan Hus Church.
