29 August 2012 FLI Summer Internships 2012
In the summer of 2012, a handful of Hobart and William Smith Colleges students completed internships with the Finger Lakes Institute: Shannon Beston 14, Matt Paufve 14, Kelly Watters 13, Julianne Webster 13, Emily Cummings 12, Halie Wilson 13 and Sarah DePillo 14.
Beston and Paufve, both biology majors, assisted FLI research scientist Susan Cushman 98 in sampling macroinvertebrates in Seneca Lake Watershed streams.
Watters, an architecture major, researched ways to increase sustainability on campus through the installment of Store the Storm rain barrels, while studying green roofs, porous pavement and and other opportunities for green infrastructure on campus.
Webster, environmental studies major, was advised by FLIs Adam Maurer, project manager of the Sustainable Community Development Program, to create a database of regional sources for local food and increase sustainable food options on campus.
Cummings, a recent graduate of William Smith College, holds a double major in environmental studies and engineering. She spent the summer analyzing the current waste management practices of construction and demolition companies in the Finger Lakes region and researched ways to enact greener practices.
Wilson, an environmental journalism major, helped with FLI publications, website development, and wrote a collection of FLI broadcast messages for WEOS radio.
DePillo, environmental studies and public policy major, worked with FLI Project Manager Jake Schreiber to coordinate the FLIs Watercraft Steward Program, a program designed to educate boaters on how to prevent the spread of aquatic invasive species.
