1 August 2012 Moore 07 Scores Victory in Olympics

Its still early in the Olympic sailing regatta, but Trevor Moore 07 and Erik Storck have to be pleased with their early results. Competing in the 49er class, the pair earned their first victory today on the windward/leedward course of Portland Harbour.

On July 30, the 20-boat 49er regatta began with a pair of races on the Nothe course. Moore and Storck produced a solid sixth place finish in their Olympic debut and wrapped up Day 1 with a 10th place effort. The combined results put them in seventh place.

Day 2 dawned with a typical English summer day, cold, windy and rainy. The Americans got off to a slow start in the third of what is scheduled to be a 15-race series. They found themselves in 19th place at the first mark, but fought throughout the race to climb up to 16th place.

Moore and Storck rebounded in superb fashion in race four. They rode a 19-knot wind to the lead at the first mark, slipped into second place around the next four marks, but reclaimed the lead before the finish line, beating the second place boat from Ireland by 11 seconds.

Its always a thrill to win a race, Moore said in a release issued by US Sailing. I think our mentality is going to be the same, taking one race at a time, one start at a time. Hopefully by the end of it well be there fighting for a medal.

Moore isnt the only Statesman competing in the games. Rob Crane 09 is Team USAs entry in sailings Laser class. Scheduled for 10 races, Crane sits in 36th place out of 49 entries after four races. He produced his best finish so far in the final race today, placing 28th.

At Hobart, Moore was a three-time All-American and in 2007 he became the first Statesman to win the Everett B. Morris Trophy as the College Sailor of the Year. During his collegiate career, he competed in seven ICSA National Championship events, leading the Colleges to the 2005 Team Race and Coed Dinghy National Championships. Moore was also the first Statesman sailor to earn the Francis L. Babe Kraus 24 Award as Hobarts Senior Athlete of the Year.

Crane was the first Hobart sailor to compete in two ICSA Mens Singlehanded National Championship regattas. He was 13th in his first appearance in 2006 and placed third as a senior in 2008.

49er racing is scheduled for seven races over the next three days before taking Saturday off. The final four 49er races are slated for Sunday and Monday with the medal race on Wednesday, Aug. 8. The Laser class will complete two more races tomorrow followed by an off day. The final four races will be completed on Friday and Saturday with the medal race on Monday, Aug. 6.
