14 October 2010 Med School Awaits Green 12

Walter Green 12 has been accepted into SUNY Upstates Early Assurance Program, guaranteeing him a seat in SUNY Upstates medical program upon graduation from Hobart.

Green has already learned more about the field that he intends to pursue. Over the summer, he did an eight week internship program with a gastroenterologist and primary care physician near his home in Ridgewood, N.J. There, he had a great deal of patient contact and learned about the political and economic sides of being a doctor.

He also shadowed Hobart alum and orthopedic surgeon Dr. Thomas Nordstrom 73 of Bridgewater, N.J.

I really enjoyed Dr. Nordstroms field of medicine and the time I spent with him. He gave me some great advice and we also had some interesting conversations about HWS, says Green. The Salisbury Center for Career Services and Professional Development helped Green connect with Nordstrom.

SUNY Upstates Early Assurance Program has strict requirements for those who wish to apply. Students must apply at the end of their sophomore year, and must have completed a certain amount of their pre-medical science requirements. They must also maintain a 3.5 GPA in their science classes, and a minimum overall GPA of 3.5, as well as have had a score of at least 1,300 on the SAT (math and critical reading sections only) or a 29 on the ACT.

In the Colleges pre-med program, Green is a psychology major and classical studies minor. He is also a member of the Hobart tennis team.
