The 2010 Kaplan/Newsweek Finding the Right College For You guideincluded Hobart and William Smith Colleges among the The 25 Best Schools for Do-Gooders, a list of institutions the publication describes as having the most service-minded students, faculty, and policies.

In compiling the publications first-ever college rankings, editors and researchers relied on a variety of sources, including information from the National Center for Education Statistics,The Washington Monthly, andCollege Prowler.The areas that were measured in compiling service rankings include such measurements as the proportion of alumni in the Peace Corps; the percentage of federal work-study money spent on community-service projects; the number of students participating in community service and their total service hours; whether classes incorporate service; and if there are service-based scholarships. A total of510 schools were evaluated for this category.

According to Kaplan/Newsweek, The rankings categories are tailored to address the real concerns of prospective students and their parents in an increasingly complex admissions process, covering all the aspects of the undergraduate experience.

Of the nearly 3,000 four-year colleges and universities in the U.S., the publication only considered institutions that were listed in one of the three leading college guides currently published Fiskes Guide to Colleges, the Princeton Reviews Best 371 Colleges, and U.S. News & World Reports Americas Best Colleges (HWS Colleges are listed in all three); must have relatively high academic standards; and offer a range of degrees.
