For the first time in a long time, alums have been invited, en masse, to experience campus when its bustling with activity, says Director of Alumni Relations Jared Weeden 91, director of Alumni Relations. Hobart and William Smith Colleges are hosting a first HWS Homecoming and Family Weekend in many years this weekend. Students, parents, alum, and friends alike have returned to campus to share in the HWS spirit and community.
Unlike Reunion, alums can interact with students during this Homecoming weekend, while students will get a firsthand glimpse of how the relationship with HWS and the members of our community doesnt end at graduation, says Weeden.
Were very excited to be celebrating Homecoming and Family Weekend on the same weekend, says Director of Parent Relations Kerry Cassell P07, P10, P12. This is a great chance for the entire Hobart and William Smith family to connect.
The weekend is filled with activities set to get that school spirit flowing. Friday, offers time to spend the afternoon experiencing the excitement of a soccer game as the William Smith J.V. soccer game battle against the University of Rochester, or cheering for Hobart as the Statesmen as they play Skidmore on Cozzens Field.
Saturday, participants are heading back to school and attending the mini-colleges offered by HWS faculty members. Learning about King Arthur, the man and the myth, discussing the midterm elections, or exploring the economics of baseball.
In the late afternoon, the campus community will be sure to stop by the William Smith Hill to catch this years Fall Nationals. A highlight of the nationals, which includes pie eating and tug of war, is an event touted as a soap box derby on steroids. The derby pits the men of Hobart against faculty and alums in a race down the hill in handcrafted, if somewhat creative, vehicles.
The evening kicks off with Super Tailgate at the Caird Center for Sports and Recreation, where all will hear live music from alumni band The Rum Runners, featuring the musical talents of James Baker 96, Brad Shelsy 96, Jim Mastrianni 94 and Chris Hamlen 94. Folks also will enjoy good food and company before the Hobart football team battles St. John Fisher on the newly renovated Boswell Field.
After the game, the Robert A. Bristol Field House will be rocking with a post-game extravaganza featuring more live music and dessert. This final celebration is a great way for alum, faculty, and current students to connect and share the bonds of the HWS family.
Weeden and Cassell hope to see all alums, parents and students celebrating their Colleges spirit. When our community comes together its amazing, and everyone feels a sense of pride in the Colleges, Weeden adds.
