21 April 2010 HWS Music Legacy Passes

Professor of Music Nicholas V. DAngelo P98, HON59 died earlier this week in Rochester following a brief illness. DAngelo, a long-standing member of the HWS community, had been on the music department faculty since 1955.

Generations of Hobart and William Smith students benefited from DAngelos lively presence and dedication to his craft, said HWS President Mark D. Gearan. With a career that spanned an extraordinary 54 years at the Colleges, he was an engaged colleague who brought great credit to HWS for his well known compositions and guest conductor appearances across the country and throughout Europe.

At HWS, DAngelo chaired the music department, served in leadership roles on major faculty committees, led off campus programs in London and was an active presence in the local and regional arts community.

His scholarship was recognized by the faculty in 1976 when they awarded him the Faculty Prize for Distinguished Research and Scholarship. In its citation the faculty noted: Nick has achieved considerable distinction as a versatile American composer. He has written a wide variety of instrumental and vocal ensembles.

On behalf of the entire Hobart and William Smith Colleges community, we express our condolences to Professor DAngelos wife, Eva, and his family and note our gratitude for his lifetime commitment to our students, said Gearan.

Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, April 22 at Falvo Funeral Home, 1295 Nine Mile Point Rd., Webster (Rte 250) where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, April 23.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Rochester Musicians Assn., Local 66, 875 Main St. East., Rochester, 14605 or the American Diabetes Association ., 160 Allens Creek Rd., Rochester, 14618. Interment will be private.
