29 March 2010 Hobart regains Trophy at Ithaca

The Hobart varsity eight regained the Statesman Trophy with a head-to-head win over Ithaca on the first day of the spring racing season. The result highlighted a full day of match racing.

The varsity eightReynaldo Kelly, Max Swagler, Matt Scanlon, Jack Trimble, David Roberts, Harold Zurakowski, Andrew Cobb, Andrew Fosbrook, and Carmen Ciminiregained the Statesman Trophy, donated by the Class of 1996, with a nearly 4 second margin of victory. Hobart covered the 2,000-meter course in 6:21.0, while the Bombers crossed the line in 6:24.7.

The Statesmen set the tone early with a half boat lead off the start and held off several attacks by Ithaca in the first 1,000 meters. Hobart opened up the lead during the second half of the course.

In the afternoon, the varsity eight (6:13.0) lost to Bucknell (6:05.5). The Bison had a very strong start and were able to jump out in front early, controlling the tempo from start to finish.

Hobarts second varsity eightHarrison Goldberg, Richard Mable, Francis Craig, Dillon Nachbar, David Grossman, Ryan Scully, Gerry Samson, Eddie Crocket, and Bob Taylorraced the Michigan novice eight entry in the morning. The Statesmen lead most of the race until the Wolverines rallied with a hugh sprint and went by Hobart with 100 meters to go. Michigan crossed the line in 6:24.8, 1.1 seconds ahead of the Statesmen.

In the afternoon, Hobart (6:19.3) beat Bucknell (6:31.7) in convincing fashion, leading from start to finish.

The Statesmen novice eight of Sarah Tanzer, Reid Johnson, Coty Burgess, Spencer McCormick, Rob Nanovsky, John Wasmund, Matt Bianco-Splann, Eric Ohnmacht, and Matt Hubbard raced against the Cornell lightweights in the morning and Ithaca in the afternoon. Hobart was a little shaky in its first collegiate race, trailing the Big Red (6:23.4) by more than 20 seconds.

The Statesmen made up for it in the afternoon, beating the Ithaca second varsity eight by more than five seconds (6:28.0-6:33.4).

The Hobart third varsity eightDrew Coogan, Peter Nettl, Mark Wasmund, William Gore, Evan White, David Ansel, Peter Wasmund, Michael Hess, and Michael Copacinoeked past Michigans second novice eight 6:31.0 to 6:32.8, but lost to Michigans fourth varsity eight 6:27.7 to 6:34.3.

The Statesmen will be back on the water on Sun., March 28, when they host RIT at the Hellstrom Boathouse.
