To aid efforts of international relief initiatives and to help offset the damage done by the recent earthquake in Haiti, HWS students are organizing a Hope for Haiti dance party on Saturday, Jan. 23.
Hope for Haiti Dance Party is a collaborative effort from student leaders on campus to help the victims of the earthquake, says Innis Baah 10, senior class president and one of the event organizers. We hope to raise money, collect unwanted clothes, toiletries and canned goods from this event. If that is what we can do as HWS students to be of help, then we should all rise to the occasion and help those suffering in a distant place.
The dance party will begin at 11 p.m. in the Barn, where a DJ Sam Higgs 12 will be spinning while people get down and make a donation. The admission fee is $2 per person OR a donation of unwanted clothes, toiletries or canned goods (water, soap, socks, shirts, pants, canned soup, etc). All proceeds will be donated to a relief fund.
Student leaders and faculty allies have strongly united in an effort to reach all corners of campus life, says Morgan Hopkins 10, who is also helping to organize the event. The Hope for Haiti Dance Party is the first step in a long-term plan to provide aid for those affected in Haiti. While it can often feel like we are not directly affected by international disaster, I urge everyone to think about our roommates, classmates, and teammates who have lost family members and friends. Unity is imperative, especially during times of crisis.
In addition to the dance party, the social justice and cultural clubs will be tabling in Scandling Campus Center from Wednesday, Jan. 20 through Friday, Jan. 29 during lunch and dinner hours to collect any donations for the Haiti relief efforts. A dorm storm initiative, proposed by Gabrielle Perez 11, will be in effect as well, with RAs collecting items and money for the cause.
