22 October 2009 HWS Debate Teams Season Kickoff

The HWS Debate team is off to a great start this fall. The team recently went to a tournament at the University of Vermont. Other schools that participated in the event were Cornell, Williams, Bates, RIT, Colgate, Bard, Rochester and the Claremont Colleges from California as well as many others.

I thought the tournament at UVM was a huge success, both in terms of how our varsity teams performed -with one team in the finals and another in quarterfinals- and how well some of our novices performed, with one team competing in novice finals, says Dan Maguire 11, president of the HWS Debate Team.

Of the four HWS teams at the tournament, three of them qualified for elimination rounds, while the fourth team came quite close. Gerald Buzz Klinger 12 and David Hernandez 09 took home second place out of 73 teams in the open division. In addition, the novice team made it to division finals.

The HWS Debate team has an exciting season ahead of them. Some of their upcoming tournaments will be at Toronto, Yale and Oxford University. These events are meant to be warm-ups for this years World Championships in Turkey, in which the debate team expects to send two pairs to compete.

Our team this year is stronger than it has ever been. Our varsity debaters are excellent and weve got a bunch of very promising novice debaters. I think that the year will be a very good one for our team, says Eric Barnes, assistant professor of philosophy and the teams adviser.
