Robin Pulver 67, author of the popular childrens books Punctuation Takes a Vacation, Nouns and Verbs Have a Field Day, Silent Letters Loud and Clear, and the Mrs. Toggle series, is back with a new book, Never Say Boo!, illustrated by Deb Lucke and published by Holiday House.
Pulvers book is influenced by her own childhood shyness and tells the story of Gordon, a young ghost, as he struggles to fit in at a new school of non-ghosts by eliminating the word Boo! from his vocabulary (a word he discovers to be too scary for students outside of Ghost Town). Unfortunately, his teacher, Ms. Boodle at Booniesville Elementary, is teaching the class the double vowel oo by using words such as booster, boots, and boomerang. Suffice it to say, the ghosts attempt to avoid saying boo! is no walk in the park.
In line with her previous work, Never Say Boo! is a fun and informative book for children ages 4 to 8 and has garnered acclaim from Booklist/ALA, Kirkus Reviews, Publishers Weekly, and School Library Journal. Next fall, Holiday House will publish Pulvers book titled Thank You, Miss Doover!
Pulver graduated from William Smith College in 1967 with a B.A. in French. While at William Smith, she took part in Schola Cantorum, the school orchestra, published poetry in The Ridge, and was an officer in Phi Sigma Iota, the modern language honor society. She has also fully overcome her own childhood shyness and has regularly spoken in schools since her first book was published in 1990.
