Students Honored at Book Fest
30 May 2009 Students Honored at Book Fest
Book Fest 2009 was a smashing success with 650 community members in attendance. The theme of the event was Judy Sierras Wild about Books, the story of a librarian who drives her bookmobile into a zoo, helping animals to learn all about this new something called reading. Book Fest activities included sponge prints, face painting, mask making, and bookmaking to increase the childrens curiosity for reading and learning in a fun, hands-on way.
Immediately following Book Fest 2009, the Center for Community Engagement and Service-Learning recognized students who have been engaged and dedicated to service in the 2008-2009 academic year. The Compass Award, given to seniors who have had a consistent and significant impact on the Center for Community Engagement and Service-Learning (and therefore also the Colleges and extended community), was presented to the Days of Service co-Chairs Kathleen Taylor 09 and Jillian Petrella 09. These students took an existing and impressive program and, through an innovative and pioneering approach, created an even greater impact on the community.
Amanda Ward 11 and Caitlin Evans 09 were both awarded the Civic Leadership Award in recognition of valuable contributions to Hobart and William Smith Colleges and Geneva communities through dedicated service and engagement as a civic leader. This award is presented to students who have excelled in community service endeavors and become personally invested with related social justice issues, becoming civically engaged. Their ongoing involvement with The Center for Community Engagement and Service-Learning programs have impacted and empowered others and therefore left a legacy upon the campus and extended community.
Among the honored volunteers were tutors Katherine Giglio 11, Cameron Regan 10, Gary Anthony 11 and Michelle Badagnani 09. The Engaged Student Scholar Award was given to Casey Marshall 09, and Lynn Cutter 09 was recognized as the Zonta Female Leader for her embodiment of Zonta Internationals mission statement: working together to advance the status of women worldwide through service and advocacy. Also recognized for their exceptional service to Hobart and William Smith Colleges and the extended community were Rayza Santiago 09 and Jacquelyn Sands 09.
These students make up our varsity team of Community Service, says Assistant Director of the Center for Community Engagement and Service Learning Sarah Entenmann.
