The French and Francophone Studies Department is sponsoring a North African Films Series, scheduled to get underway at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 5 in the Intercultural Affairs Center with a screening of Chronique des annes de braise (Algeria, 1975).

Directed by Mohammed Lakhdar-Hamina, the film is the winner of the prestigious Palme dOr at Cannes in 1975, Chronicle of the Years of Embers portrays Algerias struggle for independence from French colonial rule. The story follows a peasants migration from his drought-stricken village to his eventual participation with the Algerian resistance movement, just prior to the outbreak of the Algerian War of Independence.

This ground-breaking and important film is rarely screened in the United States, adding an even greater importance to this inaugural screening. The event will bring together critical issues related to world history, film, society and politics.

All members of the HWS community are encouraged to attend the event.
