With hopes of acquainting students with issues and realities around the Francophone world, providing them with a cultural breadth that raises their consciousness of worldly perspectives and improving their level French-language proficiency, the French and Francophone Studies Department is sponsoring a series of French films open to HWS students, faculty, and staff.
As part of French 243: Topics in Francophone Culture Problematique de la Francophonie, a course taught by Associate Professor of French and Francophone Studies Kanate Dahouda, films will be shown each Tuesday at 8 p.m. in Smith Hall, room 212.
The next film in the series, Indochine, set during the French occupation of Southeast Asia, will be shown on Tuesday, Feb. 19. The movie explores the history of Indochina from the 1930s to the 1950s through the lives of a Frenchwoman (Catherine Deneuve) and her adopted daughter Camille (Linh Dan Pham) who becomes a communist revolutionary after she falls in love with a French soldier.
