In its final installment of a month-long series of profiles honoring Womens History Month, the Finger Lakes Times featured Elizabeth Lib Eaton White 33, L.H.D.03, P70, a retired social worker and one of the oldest living alumnae of William Smith College.
From a class of just 34 students, White majored in sociology and home economics and was active on the Hobart and William Smith campus. She played field hockey and basketball, was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Christian Association, International Relations Club, Big Sister Committee, William Smith Athletic Association and the Little Theatre. After graduation in 1933, she received her masters in social work from Columbia Universitys School of Social Work.
Working during the height of the Great Depression, she became a caseworker with the Monroe County Welfare Department and, from there, worked at numerous child welfare agencies across the country before moving back to Geneva in 1957. In 1962, White became the founding executive director of the Family Counseling Services of the Finger Lakes. By the time she retired in 1976, Family Counseling Services grew from helping about 100 families in Geneva to an agency that annually serves about 1,500 families.
