This fall, the Center for Community Engagement and Service-Learning (CCESL) recruited five students to serve as honorary executive board members of local community agencies in Geneva. Martha Beltz 11 will serve on the Boys and Girls Club board; Amanda Hawley 11 will join the board for Genevas Athletic Booster Club; Success for Genevas Children will add Ryan Kincaid 11; Molly DiStefano 10 will join the board of Family Counseling of the Finger Lakes; and the Chamber of Commerce welcomes Lauren Avery Samuelson 09 to its board. Students recently participated in an hour-long training session with Rob Gladden, director of the Chamber of Commerce, to understand board member responsibilities and expectations.
Among the primary goals of CCESL is to give students the opportunity to understand what happens behind the scenes in the operation of a non-profit organization. Being a part of an executive board is an element of engaged citizenship with members of the board deciding how to effectively provide services.
Katie Flowers, associate director of CCESL, hopes students will learn about the need to be active members of their local communities in dealing with different socioeconomic issues community members face.
The students will learn firsthand from our wonderful community partners what it means to be an engaged citizen,' said Flowers. The board members work tirelessly to promote the mission and outreach efforts of their respective organizations. They are excited about the prospect of the positive energy HWS students will bring to their meetings and organizations.
