30 September 2008 Rent Star Comes to HWS
From off-Broadway to Broadway, play to film, New York City to Geneva, Anthony Rapp takes his audience through his career -and his struggles-as an original cast member of Rent. In this Tony Award winning musical Rapp played Mark Cohen, the filmmaker who spends a year recording the lives of his friends as they fight against homelessness, AIDS and maturity. Rapp will explore the social significance of these issues at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 7, in the Smith Opera House.
Rapp has also appeared on Broadway as a child actor in the short-lived musical The Little Prince and the Aviator, and John Guares Six Degrees of Separation, as well as in the film Adventures in Babysitting. Nonetheless, he remained obscure until the production of Jonathan Larsons Rent, and it changed his life.
After nearly 5,000 performances of Rent, Rapp undertook other projects-though none had the effect that Rent had on him and his audiences. He even wrote a book about his experiences called Without You: A Memoir of Love, Loss, and the Musical Rent, which he will present for HWS and the Geneva community.
