To kick off the Civic Leadership Lecture Series, Rusty Pedersen P12, interim director of Bridges to Community, will speak on Tuesday, Sept. 23 in the Geneva Room.
Bridges to Community, a non-profit cultural exchange organization, aims to create a world where basic needs are treated as human rights: shelter, nutrition, education, healthcare and employment.
In promoting community development at present concentrating in Nicaragua Bridges to Community is different than many organizations of its kind in that it has volunteers on the ground at all times.
When the Center for Community Engagement and Service Learning (CCESL) was looking to expand the alternative spring break program, Carl Ranieri 11, who participated in and led Bridges trips in high school, approached Director of CCESL Ave Bauder with the idea of getting HWS involved.
The result of that conversation? This spring, HWS will offer 10 students the opportunity to travel with Bridges to Community to Ticuantepe, Nicaragua to aid the community building projects in-progress.
While researching the Bridges program, Bauder got in contact with Pedersen, the parent of Chris Pederson 12, a Hobart first-year, and agreed to be the first speaker of this years Civic Leadership Lecture Series.
In his talk, Pedersen will discuss how Bridges was developed, how he began working there, what specifically the organization does, and what civic leadership and being a global citizen means in terms of the organization.
The talk begins at 7 p.m. All are encouraged to attend.
