Genovese Steps Up the Pace at Lacrosse Camp
25 July 2007 Genovese Steps Up the Pace at Lacrosse Camp
Having directed the overnight lacrosse camp for the past 11 summers, William Smith Head Lacrosse Coach Pat Genovese was eager to get on the field this year with an enthusiastic group of 61 girls ages 12 to 17.
In fact, many of the players had attended the camp in previous years, and Genovese appreciated the opportunity, to see the campers who come year after year and see how theyve improved. It makes it enjoyable to move at a faster pace.
While every player had some lacrosse experience, their abilities varied, and the opportunity to play alongside players of all levels pushed them and allowed the coaches to instruct in more complex techniques.
Everyone stepped up their levels in the week, and we were able to charge up with a little more lacrosse skill, said Genovese, who was assisted by William Smith Assistant Lacrosse Coach Lindsey Breese, Bates College Head Lacrosse Coach Brett Allen, Methodist College Head Lacrosse Coach Wylie Crisanti and two current Herons, Rachel Stahl 08 and Sarah Davidson 08.
The camp addressed all aspects of the sport, with morning drills and group games, afternoon practices that focused on building offensive and defensive capabilities and evening competition, in which every camper played at least one game. They also attended sessions on NCAA recruiting guidelines, conditioning, strength training, nutrition, mental training and leadership. The skills they learned were put to the test in the camps finale, a play-off in championship format.
In addition to the focus on lacrosse, Genovese said that another benefit of the camp was that it provided the players, many of whom are or will soon be looking at colleges, with the opportunity to visit the campus and the Finger Lakes region in order to discover all that the area has to offer.
