10 April 2007 State Supreme Court Justice Rosenbaum '86 to speak at annual Charter Day celebration

185 years gives Hobart College quite a lot to celebrate. Thats the theme behind the upcoming Charter Day ceremonies, an annual event that brings together students and alums to recognize the best of Hobarts traditions and achievements, honoring undergraduates and welcoming new members of the Orange Key, Chimera and Druid societies.

The event will begin at 10:45 a.m. on Saturday, April 14 in St. John's Chapel. This years ceremonies will feature a keynote address by The Hon. Matthew A. Rosenbaum 86, a justice of the New York State Supreme Court.

In addition, Benjamin MacDonald '07 will be the featured student speaker. The Bedford, N.Y., native has been an active member of the Hobart Lacrosse team as well as a Deans List honoree.

Rosenbaum is a justice in the Seventh District, which includes Ontario, Seneca, Yates, Wayne, Cayuga, Livingston, Monroe and Steuben counties. When appointed to his current post by Governor George Pataki, he was one of the youngest justices to ever serve on the States highest court. During his tenure at the Colleges, Rosenbaum was elected a Druid and was a member of the Delta Chi Fraternity.

Charter Day is an invitation to explore the history and traditions of Hobart College and hear from one of our most talented and dedicated alumni, said interim Dean Eugen Baer. Rosenbaum is an exemplar of the spirit of service and academic achievement to which we are called.

A graduate of the Boston University School of Law, Rosenbaum was a former hearing officer for the New York State Higher Education Services Corp. and the Monroe County Department of Health. He is also involved in private practice.

Rosenbaums ties with HWS are strong. His father, Richard M. Rosenbaum 52, served as a trustee of the Colleges from 1971 to 1989. The elder Rosenbaum is also a former justice of the State Supreme Court.
