26 March 2007 Hawley, sports industry leaders on deck

Students can receive firsthand advice on how to land a job in the sports industry from Rusty Hawley 79 of the New York Giants a panel of industry leaders at a Sports Careers Forum on March 30 and 31.

Several alumni and alumnae who are frontrunners in the business will participate in the two-day forum, sharing their insights on a range of career opportunities at the corporate, collegiate and professional levels of sport.

Hawley has been with the Giants for more than a decade, and is in his 25th season with the NFL. He previously worked on the staff of Commissioner Pete Rozelle and later with the licensing and marketing arm, NFL Properties. He earned his bachelors degree in psychology and was a member of the Statesmen, Sigma Chi, the Interfraternity Council and Little Theater. He spoke at the Napier seminar in April 2002.

The Sports Careers Forum From Liberal Arts to a Career in Sports: How Do I Get There? will kick off at 2 p.m. on Friday, March 30 in the Sanford Room of the Warren Hunting Smith Library with a welcome by President Mark Gearan.

Throughout the forum, students can talk with alumni and alumnae from various professions within the sports world at more than a dozen panel discussions and breakout sessions. The panels will focus on topics such as The Business of College Athletics; The Good, Bad and Ugly: The Pros and Cons of Sports Careers; Coaching at the College Level; Graduate School Strategy: Where and When?; Careers in Fitness Management; and The Academic and Consulting Sides of Sports Psychology.

Scheduled presenters include Philip Buttafuoco 83, executive director of Lacrosse Coaches Association; Donna Daniels 86, vice president of marketing for the National Basketball Association; Louis Kovacs 94, account manager at Octagon Marketing; Josh MacArthur 92, director of athletics at Babson College; Michael Martin 84, vice president of sales and marketing at Brine, Inc.; Matthew Munnelly 93, assistant athletic director at the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, Md.; and Dr. Greg Shelley, chair of the Sport Sciences Graduate Program at Ithaca College. In addition, the Colleges Scott Yoder 01, assistant football coach and Russ Hess, director of the Sport and Recreation Center, will participate.

The Forum is being organized by Bob Murphy, director of Career Services; Iva Deutchman, professor of political science; Mike Hanna 68, director of Hobart Athletics; and Brian Murphy 07.
