Catherine Gallout, professor of French and Francophone Studies, recently published an essay La topique de lOrient selon les 'Lettres Persanes' et dans les 'Lettres dune Peruvienne,' in the volume etrange topos etranger, published by Les Presses de lUniversite Laval in Quebec.

The essay deals with the representation of the oriental subject in 18th century fiction and is part of her current research on the representation of the other, which led to an invitation to the international colloquium in October at the University of Pau (France)
on Africa and the Africans in 18th century French imagination.

Her paper presented there, Les textes de Zingha, dealt with the different representations of Queen N'Zingha of Angola in European texts ranging from 16th century missionary accounts to 19th century feminist chronicles.

With Jean Kalfsa of Cambridge University and Stephane Lajkine of Toulouse University, Gallout also led a day-long doctoral seminar in November on La Rencontre at the University of Clermont-Ferrand in France.
