Virginia Tilley, associate professor of political science, had an article in the May 12 issue of CounterPunch. Titled So, Who's to Blame? the editorial addressed the recent scandal over abuse of Iraqi prisoners by the U.S. military.
Tilley was also quoted in the May 16 Democrat and Chronicle article titled Shock and awe of war images anger, inspire.
Ironically, said Tilley, the grim pictures are a way for the United States to raise its moral standing in the Arab world, by simply admitting mistakes.
She was quoted for similar views in the May 19 Providence Journal article In R.I., Muslims say they won't misjudge Americans.
Arabs and the rest of the world are hearing Americans say, 'We didn't know; we're appalled. We're not satisfied with this explanation,' she said. That's the best possible message to send the world. It tells the world that Americans do mean well and that when Americans find out [the treatment of Iraqis] isn't what they thought it was, they stand up and shout and change it.
