Last night Charles Stith, the former Ambassador of Tanzania, shared his views on global security in light of the September 11 attacks. Stith called on the audience to support action that addresses the root causes that fuel the hatred in terrorist cells around the world. Ending poverty and promoting democratization were two themes carried throughout his talk.
War has been declared on the United States, said Stith, a strong and compassionate speaker who went on to discuss U.S. involvement in Iraq and defeating Al Qaeda.
There can be no peace and security without justice, he said, encouraging Americans to support aiding impoverished nations. Its time for the U.S. to step upand not with military muscleto the bigger challenge, and to find a diplomatic solution to the discontent and poverty of others.
The point, simply put, is if we continue to do the same thing, the same way, well get the same results, he said. This is our challenge to do what we can, where we can, in order to move this world we live to a higher plane.
