President Mark Gearan was an example in the article The College Presidency: Player or Spectator? in the August/September 2002 Community College Journal. The article sought to answer the question Should college presidents be leaders in our civil society and to what extent? Gearan was noted for being a political actor in testifying before the U.S. Congress on December 4, 2000, about the presidential transitions.
