Clarence R. “Dick” Anderegg ’67

U.S. Air Force Retired Colonel; Author

An active-duty U.S. Air Force officer for more than 30 years, Ret. Col. Clarence R. “Dick” Anderegg ’67 was commissioned through the Air Force ROTC Program at Hobart College on June 11, 1967 and began active duty on July 26, 1967. A former F-4 Fighter Weapons School instructor pilot, Anderegg flew fighter aircraft more than 3,700 hours, including 170 combat missions during the Vietnam War.

Following his retirement from the Air Force at the rank of Colonel, Anderegg served as an air and space power strategist in Project Checkmate during the planning and execution of operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom. He later provided policy and guidance to four key components of the Air Force history program as the director of the Air Force History and Museums Policies and Programs.

Anderegg is the author of The Ash Warriors, a history of the Mount Pinatubo eruptions and subsequent evacuation of Clark Air Base, and Sierra Hotel, a history of cultural changes in the U.S. Air Force following the Vietnam War. He is also an adviser to the Smithsonian Channel’s Air Warriors, where he recently appeared on an episode featuring the P-51 Mustang fighter plane and its role in World War II.

Anderegg has received numerous distinguished awards and honors for his service, including the Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster, Distinguished Flying Cross with two oak leaf clusters, Meritorious Service Medal with five oak leaf clusters and Air Medal with 11 oak leaf clusters. Anderegg is a member of the Air Force Association, Order of Daedalians and the former chair of the Habitat for Humanity of Northern Virginia Construction Committee.

As a Hobart student, Anderegg majored in English and was a member of Phi Sigma Kappa, Interfraternity Council, band and served as captain of the swim team. As an alumnus, Anderegg has been a Charter Day Speaker, a Career Services Volunteer and a member of the Wheeler Society.

In 2017, Anderegg and his wife, Jean Sutherland Anderegg ’67 returned to campus to celebrate their 50th Reunion and their 50th wedding anniversary. The Andereggs were married the day after graduation at St. John’s Chapel in June 1967.
