Childhood Education (B.S.)
The childhood education major prepares students to teach at the elementary level in grades 1-6. Education practica provide experience in a variety of public and private elementary school settings in the Geneva area and across the Finger Lakes region. Student teaching must be completed in grades one through six.
Inclusive Childhood Education (B.S.)
The inclusive childhood education major prepares students for certification in both Childhood (grades 1-6) and Students with Disabilities (grades PK-12). In addition to completing all the requirements described above for childhood education certification, students pursuing dual certification take four courses related to special education offered by the educational studies, psychological science, and sociology departments, and complete two additional seminars in teaching students with disabilities. Student teaching is completed in both special education and general education school settings.
Adolescent Education (B.S.)
The adolescent education major prepares students for certification at the secondary level, grades 7–12, in the subject area in which they plan to teach. Students complete a major or minor in their selected field of study and meet additional certification requirements related to their area of concentration. The department prepares teachers of biology, chemistry, earth science, English, French, Latin, mathematics, physics, Spanish, and social studies (social studies certification requires a major in history, political science, or economics along with additional area-specific requirements). Fieldwork is completed in the student’s certification subject area, and student teaching must be completed at the seventh-grade level or higher in the subject area in which certification is sought.
Inclusive Adolescent Education (B.S.)
The inclusive adolescent education major prepares students for certification at the secondary level, grades 7–12, in a specific subject area, as well as certification in Students with Disabilities, grades PK–12. Students complete a major in the subject area they plan to teach and meet additional certification requirements related to their area of concentration. Fieldwork and student teaching are completed in the student’s certification subject area, with student teaching required at the seventh-grade level or higher. Graduates are prepared to teach in both general education and special education settings.
TESOL - Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (B.S.)
The Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages major prepares students for certification to teach English to speakers of other languages in grades PK- 12. Students complete required coursework in TESOL, including EDUC 230 and EDUC 231, as well as four courses in one or more world languages. Candidates must also complete an approved major in anthropology, English, French and Francophone studies, history, individual studies, international relations, psychological science, sociology, Spanish and Hispanic studies, theatre, or writing and rhetoric. Graduates are prepared to support multilingual learners across a range of grade levels and educational settings.
Art Education (B.S.)
The art education major prepares students for certification to teach visual arts in preschool through grade 12. Students complete fieldwork in art classrooms from kindergarten through high school, and student teaching is completed at both the elementary and secondary levels. Candidates must complete a major in studio art that includes either four art history courses or three art history courses and one course in aesthetics. Art history coursework must address at least two historical periods or cultures. Graduates are prepared to teach visual arts across PK–12 school settings.
