Antigone

by Sophocles
translated by Richard Emil Braun

What does it mean to rule fairly? To whom do we owe our loyalty? At what cost? What is the relationship between justice and the law? Is it a sign of strength or weakness to allow the advice of others to transform us? To what lengths will people go to justify the death and dishonor of those who have wronged them? Can there be peace in a world where everything is imagined in opposition? These questions in Sophocles’ Antigone resonate as strongly as ever in Richard Emil Braun’s poetic translation. The HWS Theatre 2024-2025 season opens with Antigone, directed by Professor of Theatre H. May. This classical Greek tragedy will be performed October 3rd and 4th at 6:00 pm and October 5th at 2:00 and 6:00 pm in the Sunken Gardens on the HWS Arts Campus (rain location: McDonald Theatre).

Audience members are encouraged to bring chairs or blankets, as no seating will be provided. Audience members are also welcome to bring a picnic meal to the performances in the Sunken Gardens. Due to limited parking on the HWS Arts Campus, HWS Theatre will run a shuttle to and from the Sunken Gardens for all performances. Shuttles will leave from the parking lot behind Sherrill Hall at 30 minutes and 15 minutes before curtain and will return patrons to the lot following the performance. Patrons may park in any spot in the lot off of St. Clair Street behind Jackson, Potter and Rees Halls.

Tickets for all HWS Theatre productions are free (donations accepted). Online ticket reservations close two hours before each performance. Remaining tickets will be available at the Box Office, one hour before each performance.

Please note: In the event of rain, the performance will be moved to McDonald Theatre in the Gearan Center. This will be announced on HWS Theatre social media (Facebook and Instagram). The audience capacity in the Sunken Gardens is larger than McDonald Theatre. Seats in McDonald Theatre will be first-come, first-serve. No food or drink (other than water) is permitted in McDonald Theatre.
