Designed for college/university dance majors and advanced students from performing arts high schools and professionally-oriented private studios. Students enrolling in BEDI will receive a full tuition waiver for the Somatic Dance Conference that follows.

Proposal applications for conference presentations will be accepted between November 1, 2017 and February, 1, 2018. Please e-mail Cynthia Williams, williams@hws.edu.


The 6th Annual Somatic Conference & Performance Festival, Making Your Corner of the World a Better Place: Somatics, Science, Pedagogy and Performance, July 10-13, 2018, will be a rich exchange of ideas and practices that celebrate embodied learning through diverse modalities and approaches. Dance artists and educators with somatic-based approaches to dance and movement education, choreography, creative work and/or performance will present movement sessions, lectures, panels, and performances.

Featured Presenters/Performers:

ALLEGRA ROMITA AND NANCY ROMITA, authors of Functional Awareness Anatomy in Action for Dancers “Dancer Wellness & Self Care to Empower a Growth Mindset in Student Learning and Improve Dance Skills” are the Somatics Keynote Presenters.

ERIC FRANKLIN, director of Dynamic Neurocognitive Imagery (DNI)TM and author of numerous books on the Franklin Method is the Dance Science Keynote Presenter.

DON HALQUIST will give the Dance Pedagogy Keynote Address and moderate the dance pedagogy and performance round table discussion.

EDISA WEEKS, choreographer and director of the Brooklyn-based DELIRIOUS Dances, is a featured performer and keynote for the Dance Performance.

CLARENCE BROOKS, whose stellar career as a performing artist has embraced several dance forms and many leading professional companies, is a featured choreographer and performer for the welcome concert.

Registration for the Somatic Dance Conference and/or BETI/BEDI is not available online. Complete information and registration forms are available at www.billevansdance.org.

Somatic Conference Scholarships are available for college students registered for the BETI/BEDI and for students of presenters and choreographers in the Somatic Dance Conference and Performance Festival.

Housing Information

Residences open on the afternoon of July 3. Residences close by 9 a.m. on July 14.

Each reservation is considered as single occupancy unless a roommate is requested.

There are two options for housing during the conference, Odells Village or Comstock House.

Odells Village consists of a group of air conditioned townhouses each with four single bedrooms, two bathrooms, living room, kitchen, and computer/internet access. There is a shared laundry facility within the pod, and the laundry machines are card access only. The space will consist of living room, kitchen, computer/internet access, linen, pillow, blanket, standard size towel and wash cloth are included on each bed in Odells. You may choose to bring a special pillow, blanket and/or larger bath towel with you. Please be sure to pack toiletries and a hair dryer for your stay.

Comstock House is one of William Smith’s historic residence halls. Comstock House has three floors in all. The pond view level of Comstock is equipped with cable and computer/Internet access, the bedrooms are air conditioned, the bathrooms are communal, and there is a common area with a kitchen. The 1st floor is equipped with cable and computer/Internet access, the bedrooms are not air conditioned, there are private bathrooms located between every two rooms and are shared by the occupants of these connected rooms, and there is a large living room area with kitchen.  The 2nd floor is equipped with cable and computer/Internet access, the bedrooms are not air conditioned, there are private bathrooms located between every two rooms and are shared by the occupants of these connected rooms. The residence is connected to Miller House by a basement passage and has laundry facilities, which are card access only. Linen, pillow, blanket, standard size towel and wash cloth are included on each bed in Comstock. You may choose to bring a special pillow, blanket and/or larger bath towel with you. Please be sure to pack toiletries and a hair dryer for your stay.

Check-in for Somatic Dance Conference will take place at the Gearan Center for Performing Arts on the afternoon of July 10. Check-in for BETI/BEDI will take place at the Gearan Center for the Performing Arts on the afternoon of July 3.
