Robert Murphy

Vice President for Enrollment/Dean of Admissions

Bob came to Hobart and William Smith in 2004 as the director of the Salisbury Center for Career Services. In 2009, he accepted a position as the Vice President of Enrollment and Dean of Admissions. Bob has a B.S. in education and history from Norwich University as well as an M.Ed. in rehabilitation counseling and C.A.S. in student personnel administration, both from Springfield College. A former officer in the U.S. Marine Corps, he worked with Pepsi-Cola, serving as Chief Operating Officer of PepsiCo International in Istanbul among other roles, for 26 years before "retiring" to higher education. He is an honorary member of the Hobart Class of 2006.

John graduated from Colgate University with a bachelor's degree in history. He served as an assistant and associate director of admissions at Colgate for seven years, and then made a move to become Director of Admissions at Skidmore College. He joined the HWS staff in 2005.

Bill graduated from Hobart College in 1996 with a dual major in comparative literature and Greek. He completed a master's degree in liberal studies at Nazareth College. Before returning to his alma mater in 2005, Bill taught English at Avon Old Farms School and served as Head Lacrosse Coach at the University of Hartford. Bill works with a number of individual schools around the country.

Marylyn earned a degree in psychology from Wells College, where she worked in admissions for five years after graduation. She joined the HWS admissions team in 2008 and currently oversees all on and off-campus events for prospective students and their families.

"It is in my nature to help people, and that's what we do every day in Admissions. I especially enjoy helping students determine if this community is the right fit."

Caitlin graduated from William Smith with dual majors in environmental studies and geoscience. She worked in the HWS office of admissions for two years before leaving to earn a masters in higher education administration from the University of Michigan. She later worked at a boarding school in Michigan, serving as a college counselor and dorm parent. She rejoined the HWS admissions team in 2010.

"Without a doubt, my favorite thing about HWS is the community. Students, faculty and staff members are proud to be a part of the HWS family, and because of that, they all work hard every day to make it a better place. As an alum and staff member, I am proud that I can associate myself with such a wonderful group of people. Jacqueline graduated from Amherst College with a double major in Psychology and Spanish in 2009. Upon graduation, she taught kindergarten and fifth grade in the Philadelphia public school district through Teach for America while simultaneously earning her M.S.Ed. from the University of Pennsylvania’s Graduate School of Education. Afterward, she moved to Columbia Journalism School’s Office of Career Services. Jacqueline joined the HWS admissions team in 2013 as the regional representative for the New York metro area.

Lisa graduated from William Smith in 2003 with a degree in Economics. While at HWS, she was a member of the swim team as well as coached the local girls high school lacrosse team. Upon graduation, she worked for a national real estate corporation recruiting at the executive level. Lisa returned to HWS in 2010.

"I love meeting with prospective students, getting to know them and helping them get to know HWS. What's really great about this place is that your HWS experience doesn't end when you graduate. I keep in touch with my professors and I'm constantly running into alums, parents and other HWS community members throughout my travels."

Suzanne Willard '99

Sue earned a bachelor's degree in history from William Smith College in 1999 and completed the education program. After earning a master's degree in history and serving as a graduate assistant soccer coach at Washington College, she returned to William Smith as assistant coach for the Herons in 2001. From there, Sue went on to coach soccer at both the NCAA Division I and III levels, before rejoining HWS in the Office of Admissions.

Rebecca earned her B.A. in communication from Roberts Wesleyan College in Rochester, N.Y., and an M.S. in higher education from Syracuse University. She joined the admissions team in 2009. Before coming to HWS, Rebecca worked as an admissions counselor at Wells College.

"It's so rewarding to see a student through the entire admissions process, and then watch them on campus in the fall, finding their niche in the community. That's really the best thing about this place; when I came to HWS, I immediately felt a great sense of community, and I know my students feel it, too."

Jim graduated from St. John Fisher College with a bachelor of arts in history with a minor in education. Before joining the Admissions Office, he spent ten years as a teacher, most recently at a Syracuse-based alternative school, where he ran a computer-based learning program. Jim has coached college football at Morrisville State and Hobart College. He joined the HWS admissions team in 2011 as an Associate Director of Admissions. Jim lives in Liverpool, N.Y. with his wife, Elizabeth, and their three children, James Jr., Mikaila and Zachary.

Kate graduated from William Smith in 2007 with a bachelor of arts degree in individual studies – Diversity in the Workplace. Following graduation, Kate was the first AmeriCorps VISTA member at HWS, serving with the Center for Community Engagement and Service Learning. She later worked at Massachusetts Campus Compact, where she was the coordinator of student initiatives. Kate returned to HWS in 2012, accepting a position as a New England regional representative.

Claire graduated from William Smith with a major in sociology, and a minor in public policy with a concentration in health. She played three years of soccer for the William Smith Herons. During her senior year she joined the admissions staff and worked as a tour guide and panel speaker.

I will forever have a deep appreciation and connection with this place because of how much I grew. Gina earned her B.S. in Business Administration at the State University of New York at Geneseo in 2011. She joined the HWS community in 2012 as a Counselor in the Financial Aid Office and transitioned to the Admissions Office in 2015. Gina is responsible for communications and market research for the office.

Greg graduated from Hobart College in 2012 with a double major in classics and European studies. On campus, he served as the Hobart Student Government vice president, the Inter-Fraternity Council president and served on the Committee on Standards. Greg returned to campus in October of 2012.

Ellie graduated from William Smith in 2013 with a bachelor of arts degree in psychology, and minors in child advocacy and art history. During her four years at HWS, she was a member of the club equestrian team as well as the Colleges' Chorale and Cantori. In her sophomore year, she joined the residential education staff as a resident assistant, and in her junior year was able to continue her passion for community service abroad in Galway, Ireland.

"The enthusiasm that students and faculty have for this campus and what it can provide students in their time here is contagious. HWS has encouraged me to realize my passions, become confident academically, and has given me a place to call home. I love seeing new faces of prospective students and families walk through the door, and as a recent alumna, sharing my experiences with them so they can gain a sense of the special community here at HWS."

Maren graduated from Siena College in 2012 with a bachelor's degree in English. While at Siena, Maren played four years of varsity soccer, serving as a captain during her senior year. Upon graduation, Maren worked for three years as an assistant director of admissions at Nazareth College in Rochester, N.Y. She joined the HWS admissions team in 2015.

She joined the admissions team at HWS shortly after graduation in 2015. Mara is responsible for welcoming prospective students and their families to campus and assisting with any special requests that arise during their visit.

Luke graduated from Hobart College in 2014 with a bachelor's degree in English and minors in both art history and European studies. He developed his concentration in modernist Irish literature while studying abroad in Galway, Ireland. While on campus, Luke worked for four years as a tour guide in Admissions and served as a Writing Colleague. He was also an active member of the Hobart club rugby team and the male a cappella group, the Hobartones.

"From the small, highly engaging classes to the close-knit community outside the classroom, an HWS education enables students to grow in confidence and character as they make invaluable academic, personal, and professional connections. Rose Cherubin '15

Rose graduated from William Smith College in 2015 with a BA in public policy (healthcare concentration) and a minor in anthropology. She studied abroad in Copenhagen, Denmark, where she focused on healthcare delivery and prioritization in Northern Europe. On campus, she served as the prime minister of the Caribbean Student Association, a residential assistant in Residential Education, and served on various campus committees comprised of other students, faculty, and staff.

"Ever since I submitted my application as a prospective student in 2011, I have received much generosity from members of the Hobart and William Smith Colleges' community, many of whom are still a part of my support system. I have grown so much as a person while at the Colleges, and could not have asked for a better undergraduate experience. No matter what walk of life one comes from, people are always willing to lend a helping hand. I am excited to work with the Office of Admissions to "pay it forward" and help provide other students the awesome opportunities of having a Hobart and William Smith education as I received."

Zach graduated from Hobart College in 2015 with a major in environmental studies and dual minor in sustainable community development and anthropology. He was a member of the Hobart lacrosse team for four years and was voted captain his senior year. He studied abroad on a three-week summer program in Wales where he focused on outdoor education.

"As a recent graduate of Hobart and William Smith Colleges, I could not be more thankful and honored to have the ability to work with prospective students that are drawn to this institution.
