Robert Murphy

Vice President for Enrollment/Dean of Admissions

Bob Murphy Email:

Bob came to Hobart and William Smith in 2004 as the director of the Salisbury Center for Career Services. In 2009, he accepted a position as the Vice President of Enrollment and Dean of Admissions. Bob has a B.S. in education and history from Norwich University as well as an M.Ed. in rehabilitation counseling and C.A.S. in student personnel administration, both from Springfield College. A former officer in the U.S. Marine Corps, he worked with Pepsi-Cola, serving as Chief Operating Officer of PepsiCo International in Istanbul among other roles, for 26 years before "retiring" to higher education. He is an honorary member of the Hobart Class of 2006.

John graduated from Colgate University with a bachelor's degree in history. He served as an assistant and associate director of admissions at Colgate for seven years, and then made a move to become Director of Admissions at Skidmore College. He joined the HWS staff in 2005.

William Warder '96

Bill graduated from Hobart College in 1996 with a dual major in comparative literature and Greek. He completed a master's degree in liberal studies at Nazareth College. Before returning to his alma mater in 2005, Bill taught English at Avon Old Farms School and served as Head Lacrosse Coach at the University of Hartford. Bill works with a number of individual schools around the country.

Jacqueline graduated from Amherst College with a double major in Psychology and Spanish in 2009. Upon graduation, she taught kindergarten and fifth grade in the Philadelphia public school district through Teach for America while simultaneously earning her M.S.Ed. from the University of Pennsylvania’s Graduate School of Education. Afterward, she moved to Columbia Journalism School’s Office of Career Services. Jacqueline joined the HWS admissions team in 2013 as the regional representative for the New York metro area.

Suzanne Willard '99

Sue earned a bachelor's degree in history from William Smith College in 1999 and completed the education program. After earning a master's degree in history and serving as a graduate assistant soccer coach at Washington College, she returned to William Smith as assistant coach for the Herons in 2001. From there, Sue went on to coach soccer at both the NCAA Division I and III levels, before rejoining HWS in the Office of Admissions.

Kate graduated from William Smith in 2007 with a bachelor of arts degree in individual studies – Diversity in the Workplace. Following graduation, Kate was the first AmeriCorps VISTA member at HWS, serving with the Center for Community Engagement and Service Learning. She later worked at Massachusetts Campus Compact, where she was the coordinator of student initiatives. Kate returned to HWS in 2012, accepting a position as a New England regional representative.

Gina earned her B.S. in Business Administration at the State University of New York at Geneseo in 2011. She joined the HWS community in 2012 as a Counselor in the Financial Aid Office and transitioned to the Admissions Office in 2015. Gina is responsible for communications and market research for the office.

Ellie graduated from William Smith in 2013 with a bachelor of arts degree in psychology, and minors in child advocacy and art history. During her four years at HWS, she was a member of the club equestrian team as well as the Colleges' Chorale and Cantori. In her sophomore year, she joined the residential education staff as a resident assistant, and in her junior year was able to continue her passion for community service abroad in Galway, Ireland.

"The enthusiasm that students and faculty have for this campus and what it can provide students in their time here is contagious. HWS has encouraged me to realize my passions, become confident academically, and has given me a place to call home. I love seeing new faces of prospective students and families walk through the door, and as a recent alumna, sharing my experiences with them so they can gain a sense of the special community here at HWS."

Brianne Ellis '13

Brianne is originally from Cleveland, Ohio and a 2013 graduate of William Smith. During her time at HWS she served as Class President, was a teaching fellow for the Anthropology Department and studied abroad in Argentina, among other things. She majored in Sociology and Latin American Studies and minored in Child Advocacy. After graduation, she joined Teach For America in Miami, Florida and earned a Master's in Education and Social Change from the University of Miami while participating in the program.

Maren graduated from Siena College in 2012 with a bachelor's degree in English. While at Siena, Maren played four years of varsity soccer, serving as a captain during her senior year. Upon graduation, Maren worked for three years as an assistant director of admissions at Nazareth College in Rochester, N.Y. She joined the HWS admissions team in 2015.

"I am excited about my position with the HWS Admissions Office because I have a unique opportunity to help build a dynamic community—one that is diverse, enriching, and engaged. The HWS community is a training ground for good members of society. Luke graduated from Hobart College in 2014 with a bachelor's degree in English and minors in both art history and European studies. He developed his concentration in modernist Irish literature while studying abroad in Galway, Ireland. While on campus, Luke worked for four years as a tour guide in Admissions and served as a Writing Colleague. He was also an active member of the Hobart club rugby team and the male a cappella group, the Hobartones.

Bobbi graduated from Amherst College in 2013 with a bachelor’s degree in Asian Languages & Civilizations, (concentration in Japan). During her time there, she was a member of the varsity swim team, Social Council and she studied abroad in Tokyo, Japan. Prior to joining HWS, she worked in media at an ad agency in NYC. Based in NYC, she continues her love of aquatics by competing in water polo.

"In addition to fostering academic, and personal growth, what I love about HWS is that it is an extremely engaged community. From service to athletics to research, people are enthusiastic about what they are doing and supportive of each other. While this support begins in the classroom, it is rooted in preparing students for life beyond graduation."

Michelle graduated from William Smith in 2015 with a double major in anthropology and Asian studies, and minors in international relations and studio art. As a student she served as an anthropology teaching fellow, event coordinator for the Pride Alliance, theme house manager, and tour guide for admissions. She was also a member of the HWS Brass and Jazz ensembles. During her senior year, she completed a semester abroad in Taipei, Taiwan, where she studied Mandarin Chinese and taught an English course for Taiwanese students.

Rose graduated from William Smith College in 2015 with a BA in public policy (healthcare concentration) and a minor in anthropology. She studied abroad in Copenhagen, Denmark, where she focused on healthcare delivery and prioritization in Northern Europe. On campus, she served as the prime minister of the Caribbean Student Association, a residential assistant in Residential Education, and served on various campus committees comprised of other students, faculty, and staff.

"Ever since I submitted my application as a prospective student in 2011, I have received much generosity from members of the Hobart and William Smith Colleges' community, many of whom are still a part of my support system. I have grown so much as a person while at the Colleges, and could not have asked for a better undergraduate experience. No matter what walk of life one comes from, people are always willing to lend a helping hand. I am excited to work with the Office of Admissions to "pay it forward" and help provide other students the awesome opportunities of having a Hobart and William Smith education as I received."

Emily graduated from William Smith in 2016 after earning a BA in media and society with a focus in advertising, and a minor in studio art. While a student at HWS, she was a member of the William Smith soccer team, the Student Athletic Advisory Committee, and she participated in the America Reads program tutoring local grade school students. Emily was also a design intern during the construction of the Gearan Center for the Performing Arts and worked as a marketing intern in the Admissions Office during her senior year. In her junior year she studied art and architecture abroad in Rome, Italy. While abroad, she traveled to Austria, Greece, and 14 other towns within Italy to build her portfolio.

Zoe Eth '16

Zoe Eth graduated from William Smith in 2016 with a B.S. in biology and a minor in health professions. While a student, she was a member of the Heron soccer team, including the 2013 Division III National Championship team. Eth was also a member of the William Smith Athletics Core Leadership Program for two years. She interned at an elementary school in Haiti, as well as for the Burr Lab group at the Cornell Agricultural Station where she researched a biocontrol for Pierce's Disease, which infects grape vines. Eth currently serves as the head coach of the Heron JV soccer program.

"During my time at HWS I learned that in order to grow you must continue to find ways to get out of your comfort zone. Not only did HWS push me to grow, but everyone—faculty, staff, peers and coaches—supported me through the process. Carol previously worked as a customer service representative for Sodexo at Hobart and William Smith in the Buildings and Grounds Department for 13.5 years, where she assisted many of the faculty, staff and students on campus. A life-long resident of Geneva, Carol’s knowledge of the HWS campus, its community members, and her work with students has made her a valuable resource to both the admissions office and to visiting families.

"I love meeting our guests; being in Admissions is like hosting a party every day where I get to welcome families and their children who are excited about being on our campus, exploring the next steps in their college search. What a better way to for them to begin; in a beautiful house overlooking the lake, one of our most beautiful focal points on campus. Ian graduated from Skidmore College in 2017 with a bachelor of science degree in health and exercise sciences, and a minor in Spanish. While at Skidmore, Ian was a resident assistant, Peer Mentor and avid intramural volleyball and tennis player. However, Ian's favorite job while on campus was working as a head tour guide in the admissions office. He also studied abroad in Madrid, Spain, during his junior year.

Evan earned is B.A. in environmental studies at Hamilton College in 2016. He originally came to HWS as the William Smith cross country head coach in March of 2017 and joined the admissions team later that year. Evan’s work consists of all things admissions software and technology.
