We are a club for chess players of all levels. We will meet twice a week (formally) for play, but players will be encouraged to play whenever they want. We will maintain a small library of chess books and partake in chess tournaments (primarily in the Rochester area). We will also receive certification from the United States Chess Federation. This club needs 15 signatures for approval, so a booth will be utilized to generate interest and gain the requisite 15 signatures.
Mission Statement:The Hobart and William Smith Chess Club, hereby referred to as HWSCC, is an intellectual and philanthropic organization. Its goal is to bring students, faculty, staff, and Geneva residents who love to play chess together to enjoy cordial (and often) competitive games of chess. In keeping with the Colleges’ commitment to giving back to the community, HWSCC will attempt to establish an afterschool chess program at a Geneva Elementary School. Chess is perhaps the most mentally engaging game in the world. It attracts some of the world’s most prodigious thinkers and academics. Chess has been proven to increase one’s spatial visualization and critical thinking skills. HWSCC seeks to bring this fascinating and intellectually stimulating game to the Colleges. We will seek affiliation with the United States Chess Federation (USCF), allowing us to host rated tournaments. We will host meetings on [insert day(s) and times]. HWSCC will also seek to host USCF rated chess tournaments and simultaneous chess exhibitions.
