Started and organized in 2006, the HWS First Generation Initiative works to help first generation college students succeed to their fullest potential in their academic careers. We have found that many students struggling in their first years of college identify as first generation college students (the first in their family or one of the first) to attend a four year institution. Literature on first generation college attendees and the personal experiences of our students supports this concept. At Hobart and William Smith, we have developed many services to help students feel more supported by the Colleges in their collegiate experiences. We want them to know that it is completely possible to successfully get through the four years of challenges faced by any college student even if their parents didn't go to college themselves.
Mission Statement:To create and provide a support system for first generation college students at HWS, including information about the resources available to them and to raise awareness about their presence on campus. Meeting:Fridays, 4:30-6 p.m.
