Areas of Specialization:

  • Youth Activism, College Students' Voting Habits, Voter Apathy, and Civic Indifference
  • Gays in the Military, Civil Rights for Gays and Lesbians, AIDS in Public Policy, and Gays and Lesbians and the Christian Right
  • The American Presidency, and the Dangerous Expansion of Presidential Power

A young and vibrant teacher, author and researcher who writes extensively on some of the nation's hottest issues, Craig Rimmerman is an expert on key issues including gay rights, youth activism, and U.S. Presidential evaluation. Rimmerman’s knowledge on these issues make him a natural for speaking candidly with the media. He is quoted in many of the country’s leading newspapers including the New York Times, Washington Post, Chicago Tribune, Boston Globe, Christian Science Monitor, Philadelphia Inquirer and the Los Angeles Times.

On gay rights--Rimmerman is the author of several books on gay rights and in 2001 published From Identity to Politics: The Lesbian and Gay Movements in the United States (Temple University Press). He is the author of Gay Rights, Military Wrongs (1995) and Politics of Gay Rights (2000), which both offer cutting edge research in the politics of the gay and lesbian movement. He focuses on key issues for public policy including gays and lesbians openly serving in the military, anti-discrimination laws and the ongoing AIDS crisis.

On youth activism--Rimmerman, a trendsetting researcher of today's youth, has detailed his findings on the opinions of today's youth in one of his latest books The New Citizenship: Unconventional Politics, Activism, and Service (third edition, Westview Press, 2005). His research gives evidence that today's youth have found another path to activism other than through the voting booth, and covers topics such as the Internet as an element of the New Citizenship, President Bush's National Service proposals, and the impact of September 11, 2001, on American civic life.

On Presidential evaluation--During the Reagan-Bush era, Rimmerman documented how U.S. Presidential power has dangerously expanded through skillful use of the media and appeals to citizen's hopes beyond the intentions of the Constitutional framers. Since penning his book Presidency by Plebiscite: The Reagan-Bush Era in Institutional Perspective in 1993, Rimmerman is a sought-after commentator on presidential issues and insightful reflections.
