Dear Members of the Hobart and William Smith Community,

St. John’s Chapel at Hobart and William Smith Colleges, along with Our Lady of Peace Parish in Geneva, shares this Advent Service of Lessons and Carols with you for the holiday season. As you listen to the poetry, scripture and music in this advent worship, you will journey from the story of creation to the promise of Jesus’ birth which Christians will celebrate this week.

We must realize that this narrative is a journey that begins with love but does not have an ending, for love never ends. In these uncertain times where we are physically distant from those we love, where we long to see a human face, and where we hunger for human touch, it is often difficult to feel love. However, when we find ourselves in unfamiliar territory on this journey, never forget that grace has always been with humanity from the beginning of time. God reveals a deep and persistent love for us by placing God’s very own image and likeness within each human being. This image and likeness that continually yearn for the love of God, initiating a song where deep calls to deep in a never-ending relationship. Know that I pray for you as you journey through this Advent season:

Source of Infinite Love,
You never fail to wrap us into the bosom of your love,
from the moment you spoke the universe into being to the moment you formed our souls with your tender care,
you always pulled our existence into your embrace –

Open our hearts so that we may be
restored, and
reawakened to the power of your love;

Make us ready to receive your redemption
so that the love you gave us from the beginning will
sustain our faith
and kindle a hope
that can illuminate the pathway we will travel in the days ahead.

For we trod in a land of shadows,
but your gift of faith clarifies the blurry edges of our lives.
Take our tears and transform them to that soothing balm from a land of healing
where the waters tumble down from your ever flowing stream of mercy,
and the oil of joy sooths our sorrows.
Hear our supplications for all of creation, we pray
for we know that LOVE has the final say.

With prayers for our work together,

The Rev. Nita C. Johnson Byrd
