HWS Club Equestrian

Established in 2007, the Hobart and William Smith Equestrian Team competes within the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association. We are part of Zone 2, Region 1, competing against top teams such as Cornell University, Alfred University, and Nazareth College.

A common love for horses and respect for the tradition of equestrian sport is what brings these students together. We spend our time riding at Wynn Farms with the team's coach, Sarah Donahue. There is a wide variety of skills on the team from never riding a horse, to showing for 16 years. The team is about having the opportunity to improve horsemanship skills, prepare for shows, make memories, and have fun.

HWS Equestrian unites the recreation of a club sport with the competition of a varsity team. Riders are encouraged to show, but are not put under pressure to do so. Riding for pure enjoyment is a strong value of this team. This team focus on the bond with the team members and the horses. A strong bond exists between the members of HWS Equestrian, one that holds its foundation in an unconditional love for horses.

Sarah Donahue

The HWS Equestrian Team is coached by Sarah Donahue from Wynn Farms. Her facility is located out in Lima, New York where the team rides. Sarah has been in the industry for over 25 years. She specializes in the training of the rider. She spent time training under Paul Croin in Virginia. He is one of the authors of the American forward riding system, a tool which Sarah and many others use to teach their students. Sarah stays updated and educated on changes in teaching theory by regularly attending clinics throughout the year. She attends an annual clinic by George Morris, coach of the U.S Equestrian Team. Sarah has great success with her students at horse shows and numerous year end titles. She produces results through consistent clear communication with her students both young and old alike.

Sarah and Laura Donahue were named Equine Educators of the year in 2014 by the Genesee Valley Equine Clinic and have continued to work towards educating equestrians young and old through their programs.
