Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC)

Overview

IACUC oversees the institutional program for responsible and humane care and use of animals for teaching and research at Hobart and William Smith Colleges. The program is in accordance with the NIH Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH), and United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Animal Welfare Act. The IACUC reviews the institutional program and inspects animal facilities semiannually, and the animal facilities are inspected by NYSDOH and USDA annually.

Membership

IACUC is overseen by the Institutional Official (IO), Dr. Mary Coffey, Provost and Dean of Faculty. Committee members include:

Use of animals in teaching and research

Any individual who wishes to use animals for teaching and research at or supported by Hobart and William Smith Colleges must submit a protocol to the IACUC for review and approval. Individuals should contact the IACUC Chair Bradley Cosentino for instructions and an electronic form to complete.

Reporting animal welfare concerns

Any individual may report concerns about animal welfare to IACUC anonymously and without reprisal by completing the Animal Welfare Concern Form. Concerns can also be reported directly to the IACUC Chair (Bradley Cosentino, 315-781-4602), the Attending Veterinarian (Jeff Wyatt, or the Institutional Official (Mary Coffey).
