Infrastructure Systems Administrator

As a member of the Infrastructure & Security Services team, this person works with team members to ensure that the Colleges’ core technology systems are resilient, available, scalable, and secure. This team of talented architects, administrators, solution providers, engineers, and project managers maintain the integrity and high-performance of Hobart & William Smith Colleges’ core technology infrastructure. He/she/they assist with managing many aspects of our technology operations, prevent security incidents, plan for upgrades, and respond to issues that arise.


  • Performs administration duties on Microsoft Windows and VMware servers including installation, configuration, and optimization of physical, virtual, and cloud environments.
  • Supports diagnoses and troubleshooting of problems/issues with Microsoft & VMware environments.
  • Assists in administering core systems such as Active Directory, Azure AD, IIS, Microsoft 365, Microsoft Exchange, Microsoft SQL, Microsoft Teams, patch management, print management, WordPress, etc.
  • Addresses security vulnerabilities in a proactive manner.
  • Assists in the evaluation and purchase of products and services that improve information technology delivery to the campus. Collaborates with vendors to evaluate and implement technologies.
  • Performs daily system monitoring - verify the integrity and availability of all hardware, server resources, systems, and key processes, review system and application logs, and verify completion of scheduled jobs.
  • Actively updates change management documentation and provides management reports; ensure that infrastructure drawings and documentation are current.
  • Continuously refines and monitors daily backup operations, ensuring all required file systems and system data are successfully backed up and sent off-site as necessary.
  • Assists with managing the Colleges’ data center and other technology sites.
  • Provides Tier II and Tier III support on user requests regarding server infrastructure and applications.
  • Assists in the development, implementation, and maintenance of policies, procedures and general documentation.
  • Provides data for collection of service delivery performance and customer satisfaction metrics.
  • Maintains business relations with technology vendors to deliver a robust feature set and maintain a high level of availability
  • Engages in all aspects of the team and department activities.


  • Undergraduate degree in a technology-related field (equivalent training and experience will be considered)
  • At least 5 years of experience administering network and system services with a focus on managing enterprise-level TCP/IP networks and x86 servers
  • Understands standard network protocols and operating systems along with their relevant security issues
  • Possesses strong knowledge of windows server hardware and software, networking technologies
  • Exhibits proficiency with working in a team-centered environment with a high degree of planning, communication, change-management documentation, and customer service
  • Substantial experience with network security standards and practices, including traffic monitoring, anti-virus, and patch management
  • Experience with virtualization software, primarily VMware, and other advanced technologies (e.g., SANs).
  • Familiarity with ticketing, incident management systems, and ITIL-based service management
  • Experience with the following systems/services is desirable but not required: IBM/Lenovo System X servers, Linux, Oracle Database, PeopleSoft, Veritas Backup Exec, and VRanger
  • Substantial experience with network security standards and practices, including traffic monitoring, anti-virus, and patch management
  • Technical certifications, i.e. A+, CCNA, MCSA, MCSE, Microsoft 365 Enterprise Administrator, Microsoft Azure Administrator, Security+, VMware Certified Advanced Profession, etc.


This position is a full-time, 12-month, benefits-eligible administrative position. On-call hours are required for maintenance and troubleshooting. This position description is not all-inclusive, as other tasks or responsibilities may be assigned. Background check required.
