Ariola

Ashton Ariola '22
Ashton is from Mexico, N.Y. She was a Chemistry major with a minor in Environmental Studies. At HWS, Ashton was a Lead Teaching Fellow for Intro Chemistry and involved with PLEN. She spent a year doing biochemistry research under the advisement of Professor Kristin Slade, conducted research in computational chemistry as part of a National Science Foundation REU, and worked as a veterinary assistant. Ashton spent a semester abroad in Copenhagen, Denmark, where she volunteered with YouPeople, a morning cafe for homeless Copenhageners. After HWS, Ashton plans on applying to medical school and hopes to find a job in clinical research to fill her gap years.

Bonagura

Alassandra Bonagura '22
Allie is from Northwest Iowa. She created an individual major called “Healthcare, Identity, and Equity” and minored in Biology. After graduation Allie moved on to the University of Iowa to pursue a Master's in Public Health, and hopes to attend medical school in the future. At William Smith, Allie was one of the senior chapter leaders of PLEN, worked in the Dean’s office as a student assistant and was the summer employee in 2021. She interned with the Family Counseling Services of the Finger Lakes and the Finger Lakes Resiliency Network, where she helped them improve business practices and employee treatment in organizations all around the Finger Lakes. Allie also interned with Food Justice Geneva and the Community Action Plan (Cayuga) as a part of the capstone for her major.

Pearson

Justine Pearson '22
Justine is from the Quad Cities in Eastern Iowa. She spent most of her time at William Smith studying philosophy, political science and environmental studies. This past summer Justine volunteered at the River Bend Food Bank and completed a business marketing internship through UnImpaired, Iowa’s first non-alcoholic bar and eatery.

At William Smith she enjoyed playing saxophone in the HWS Jazz Ensemble and participating in soccer both at William Smith and at University College Maastricht in The Netherlands. In her final semester at HWS, Justine to finished her Honors project in philosophy which is centered around a philosophical analysis of the United States’ drug policy and drug policing practices.

She plans to pursue a Juris Doctor degree with a concentration in Corporate and Business Law.

Crabtree

Katelin Crabtree
Kate studied physics and philosophy at HWS. She is primarily focused on going to graduate school for astronomy. Kate participated in research on campus for three years. She dabbled in a little biology-based research with Bee Campus USA before moving on to astronomy research on binary stars and stellar activity with her (incredibly patient) adviser, Professor Leslie Hebb.
Kate served as President of the Physics and Astronomy club and was the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu captain for the MMA Club. She was also a CA on campus, the LCA for the Mini Quad neighborhood and a Physics Teaching Fellow.

Pena

Star Peña
Star Peña is a first-generation Puerto Rican and Dominican student from New York City. She was a student assistant at the William Smith Dean's office and also a member of the community for spiritual engagement where she created the "Light House," an on-campus living quarter devoted to fostering a community through principles of Christianity. As a Sociology major and Africana studies minor, Star analyzed her position at William Smith through a distinct perspective. Statistics show that only 26% of Latinas hold a bachelor's degree in the United States so her induction into Hai Timiai honors society holds a special place in her heart.

Martinez

Gabriela Martinez '22
Gaby is from New York City. She double-majored in Anthropology and Education and minored in Entrepreneurial studies. On-campus, Gaby was a teaching fellow for anthropology and the civic leader of outreach for the Center for Community Engagement and Service Learning. She was also an Admissions senior intern for the Colleges.

Gaby’s was named a 2021 Newman Civic Fellow by Campus Compact for her work in the community. In Geneva, Gaby worked with the Community Lunch program, the Holiday Gift Program and the American Red Cross Blood Drive. She also was a co-president of Sankofa: the Black Student Union. She participated in several of the Centennial Center programs, including the HWS Leads Certificate program and Summer Sandbox.

Mashori

Saima Mashori '22
Saima is a Pakistani citizen born in Warsaw, Poland, and raised in Dakar, Senegal. She has lived in six different countries and speaks four languages, so she was exposed to a depth of diverse and rich cultures and languages from an early age. This prompted her interest in the intricacies of international affairs and public policy. She majored in International Relations and Religious Studies, with a focus on global security and diplomacy, and Islamic Studies respectively. Saima interned for Democracy for the Arab World Now (DAWN), where sh analyzed domestic, foreign and regional affairs in the Middle East.

On campus, Saima worked as an O’Loughlin Ambassador, a Community Assistant, and a student assistant to the Hobart Dean’s Office, the Office of Advancement, and the Center for Community Engagement and Service Learning. She was also a member of the South Asian Student Association and Theta Phi Alpha.

Wahid

Nuzhat Wahid '22
Nuzhat majored in International Relations and Asian Studies with a focus on human security and development in the Middle East and North Africa. While at William Smith, Nuzhat’s roles included serving as first-year class president, William Smith Congress Vice-President and William Smith Student Trustee.

During her first year, she realized her goal of launching RED, the realizing equitable decision committee, with the intention to distribute free pads and tampons throughout the Colleges. Her commitment to service was further realized through her work as a founding member and senior facilitator of the civics-orientated non-profit, Yvote, and her internships with the Hope Reichbach Fund and Legal Aid Society of New York.

Nuzhat also served as a Writing Colleague, a William Smith Dean’s student worker, an O'Laughlin Ambassador and DEIA Chair for Theta Phi Alpha sorority.
