The William Smith College swimming and diving team wrapped up its season on Saturday night with the final session of the Upper New York State Collegiate Swimming Association Championships.
First-year Caroline Conboy capped her stellar rookie season with a fourth place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke, narrowly missing a school record. She qualified for the evening final by clocking a 2:28.83 in the morning prelims. When she returned to the pool on Saturday, she lowered her time to 2:26.57, just 0.22 off of Kelly VanGorden's 13-year-old school mark.
In the 400 freestyle relay, the Herons' A relay won the consolation final. Junior Christine Rhoads, first-year Kelsey Bohl, junior Samantha Burnett, and Conboy swam legs between 55.05 and 56.66 for a cumulative time of 3:42.21. They stopped the clock 0.19 seconds ahead of consolation finals runner-up St. Lawrence.
Conboy was William Smith's leading point producer, recording 64 for the championship. Bohl was second with 31.
William Smith produced three record-breaking swims during the four-day meet. The Herons toppled the 200 medley relay mark in both the morning and evening session on Day 1, eclipsed the 400 medley relay record on the morning of Day 2 and came within less than a second of breaking two more records on Day 3 and Day 4.
The Herons were 11th in the 15-team field with 337 points. St. Lawrence University was 10th with 411 points and Skidmore College was 12th with 267. Host Ithaca College won the team title.
