First-year Alessandra Patrizio scored just 22 seconds into overtime to lift the No. 11 William Smith College field hockey team to a 4-3 victory at No. 13 Messiah College in Grantham, Pa., this afternoon. It's the Herons third overtime victory in as many tries this season and their first win over the Falcons since 1999, snapping a 13-match slide.
Messiah (12-5) got the ball to start OT, but sophomore Madison Finn promptly stole the it for William Smith (14-3). She hit it ahead to senior Taylor Cappello, who carried the ball to the top of the circle, drawing the last Falcon defender and fed Patrizio at the left post, who rang up her seventh goal of the season.
The Herons' four tallies came off four different sticks. Seniors Margaret McConnell and Melanie O'Connor and sophomore Cory Connolly also hit the back of the cage for William Smith. Senior Morgan Atanasio added a pair of assists. In goal, first-year Biz Chirco improved to 4-0 on the season with five saves.
For the Falcons, Moriah Pfautz tallied a pair of goals, including the equalizer with 1:02 left in regulation that necessitated overtime. Brooke Sands chipped in a goal and Gina Kellett had an assist. Messiah goalie Molly Gebrosky recorded seven saves.
The Falcons wasted little time, opening the scoring in the fifth minute when Pfautz converted a feed from Kellett on a penalty corner. Messiah added to its lead in the 34th minute when Sands batted home a rebound.
Just over a minute later, the Herons cracked the scoring column when Atanasio set up Connolly for a penalty-corner goal.
The Falcons led 2-1 at halftime, outshooting the visitors 13-8 in the first 35 minutes.
William Smith got off to the fast start in the second half. Just 2:42 after the break, McConnell laced her seventh goal of the season on another penalty corner. Less than four minutes later, Atanasio assisted on O'Connor's seventh goal of the year to put the Herons in front 3-2, leading to the late game heroics of Pfautz and Patrizio.
William Smith enjoyed a 10-5 shot advantage in the second half and overtime and finished the match with an 11-7 edge in penalty corners.
The Herons will be back in action when they compete in the semifinals of the Liberty League Tournament. No. 3 seeded William Smith will visit No. 2 seeded Rochester (14-5) at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 6. The Yellowjackets defeated the Herons 3-1 in Rochester earlier this season.
