First Generation Initiative to Host Mixer

Posted on Thursday, October 03, 2013

The First Generation Initiative is hosting its second annual mixer event on Monday, Oct. 21, from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Blackwell Room in Demarest Hall. All first generation students, faculty and staff and supporting faculty and staff are invited. The mixer is an opportunity for first generation students to meet those who support the First Generation Initiative and learn more about the program, which helps first generation college students reach their fullest potential in their academic careers.

"The initiative aims to create a supportive community for first-generation college students," explains Tiffany Mitchell '14, initiative student coordinator and a first-generation student. She adds the initiative also works "to raise awareness about their presence on campus and the difficulties they sometimes experience compared to a student whose parents attended college."

First-generation college students make up roughly 15 percent of the student body. FGI connects the students with faculty or staff who help them through whatever questions they have and issues they encounter. FGI is student-run, but is supported through the William Smith Dean's Office, which is also sponsoring the mixer event.

Mitchell is a public policy major with minors in sociology and philosophy. In addition to her work with FGI, she is a civic leader for HWS Votes! and a student worker in the William Smith Dean's Office. She studied in Washington, D.C., in the fall of 2012.
