William Smith College Swimming and Diving Head Coach Kelly Kisner recently announced that Katie Stebbins '13 will join the Heron coaching staff as an assistant for the 2013-14 season. A native of Fiskdale, Mass., Stebbins graduated magna cum laude from William Smith with a bachelor's degree in biology in May.
"I'm absolutely thrilled that Katie will be joining our staff," said Kisner. "Her passion for the sport, communication skills, and in-depth knowledge of Hobart and William Smith Colleges and Heron swimming, will serve our program well. She understands what it takes to be successful both in the classroom and in the pool."
A four-year member of the Heron swimming and diving team, Stebbins was twice a member of a record-breaking relay team during her career. As a first-year, she teamed with Lauren Morosky, Casey Sherwin, and Heidi Gordon to break a nearly 12-year-old school record in the 400-yard medley relay. At the 2010 state championships, the quartet posted a time of 4:09.46, lowering the mark by more than a second.
The following year that record was broken twice. As a junior, Stebbins reclaimed a share of the record, again at the state meet. Stebbins, Sherwin, Mimi Mahoney, and Lia Duffy logged a time of 4:07.87 more than half a second faster than the previous standard.
A standout in the pool and the classroom, Stebbins was a three-time Upper New York State College Swimming Association All-Academic selection and a two-time Liberty League All-Academic pick.
The Herons completed the 2012-13 season with a 7-2 record in dual meets. They produced their best finish in over a decade at the Liberty League Championship, placing fourth in the 10-team field. At the UNYSCSA Championship, William Smith placed 12th.
