Globetrotter Mandart '14 Blogs from Asia

Posted on Friday, September 27, 2013

Annie Mandart '14 blogged from across the globe over the summer, during her marketing and business development internship at Chegg and Zinch.

Chegg, an academic company based in Santa Clara, Calif., specializes in online textbook rentals, homework help, and scholarships; the social networking company Zinch connects students to colleges and scholarships in both the United States and Asia.

With the help of Dean of Admissions and Vice President for Enrollment Bob Murphy, Mandart connected with Daniel L. Rosenweig '83, HWS Trustee and Chegg president and CEO, and Anne Dwayne, chief business officer of Chegg and Zinch.

Through the annual Charles H. Salisbury Summer International Internship Stipend, which provides financial support for students interning abroad, Mandart spent a total of nine weeks living and working in San Francisco, California; Beijing, China; and Chennai, India, assisting the companies with branding and marketing, events, and audience research and analysis.

A double major in women's studies, and writing and rhetoric, with a minor in public policy, Mandart previously held summer internships at Ad2Pro Media Solutions. Her most recent experience further broadened her horizons through the Salisbury Summer International Internship.

"This internship is giving me the opportunity to learn more about reaching a target demographic in a really special way," Mandart said during her time as a summer intern. "I see myself working somewhere that allows me to use communication skills across a platform of different mediums. I want to make a difference in a field I am passionate about, be it education technology, marketing and advertising, or gender-related studies. I can't think of a field this wouldn't help me with."

Following a three-week orientation period in California, Mandart divided her time between Beijing and Chennai, blogging as she has during travels to Malta, Venice, Belgium, and the Netherlands, where she also previously studied abroad.

"Blogging just seemed like the right way to carry my experiences through life while also sending them home for my friends and family," Mandart said.

Mandart is a student worker for the Office of Admissions and the Office of Communications. She is also a football manager with Hobart Athletics and a nursery school worker at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Geneva. She was previously the editor-in-chief of the HWS student newspaper The Herald.
