CSA Hosts Annual Masquerade Ball

Posted on Tuesday, February 26, 2013

Featuring exciting performances and held in the name of charity, the HWS Caribbean Student Association (CSA) will host its annual Masquerade Ball on Saturday, March 9. The philanthropic event will feature the theme "Stepping Back to Our Roots" and will include the unveiling of a new CSA endeavor to benefit HWS students.

The event will be held at Belhurst Castle from 5 to 8 p.m. Tickets are $10 for HWS students and $20 for non-students. The purchase of a ticket includes a masquerade mask, transportation and dinner. The CSA also invites students to attend the after-party, which will be held following the ball in the Barn from 11 p.m. to 3 a.m.

Proceeds from the event will go to Pathways Togo, a charity that strives to further the education of girls in Togo, a country in West Africa. Pathways Togo provides financial support that enables the girls to receive a college education, which they would not have otherwise been able to afford.

In previous years, the proceeds from the Masquerade Ball have benefited other important causes, such as AIDS research and relief efforts after the 2010 earthquake in Haiti.

The goal of the CSA, which has been an active part of the HWS campus since 1999, is to spread awareness of the cultural, political, and social issues surrounding the Caribbean region. The student organization meets at 7 p.m. in the Intercultural Affairs house each Thursday. In addition to these weekly meetings, the CSA hosts many charitable events throughout the academic year.

This year's Masquerade Ball is being held following the successful first annual Charity Dating Auction, which raised more than $900 for the Caribbean Heart Menders Association, a nonprofit that provides surgical care for children who are in third-world Caribbean countries and have been born with congenital heart defects.
